The Gradebook tile opens a spreadsheet with one row per student and one column per assessment or sub-part. It shows every score recorded in ZenGrader, synced from a linked ProfDesk Quiz, or typed into the grid. Use the class grid to work across everyone, or the student gradebook to work through one student's assessments as a list.
Finding and ordering
Search by roll number, name or login ID to jump to a student.
Sort students by Roll number, Name, Login ID, or a Custom drag-and-drop order. A custom order is saved for the course with Save Order.
Sort assessments by due date, oldest to newest or newest to oldest, or keep Category order, which is the default. Undated assessments appear last. An assessment with separate submission deadlines uses its earliest sub-part deadline and keeps its columns together. Your choice is saved to your account for each course, so it follows you to any browser or device. Sorting changes the on-screen grid only; exports keep their existing order.
Published assessments only hides draft assessments from the grid while you work. It is a view filter, so nothing changes for students.
The minus button on an assessment's header collapses its part columns, leaving the assessment total; it turns into a plus that brings them back. This keeps a wide grid readable, and the grid remembers which assessments you collapsed in that browser.
Entering and changing scores
Typing a score: enter a mark in the cell. With Enable Auto-Save switched on, which is the default, each change saves as you type. Switch it off to save everything at once with Save Grades.
Clearing a score sets the cell back to not graded, shown as --, and returns the work to your To Grade queue. Entering 0 records a zero.
The allowed range is 0 to the sub-part's maximum marks. A score outside it is not saved.
Linked ProfDesk Quiz scores arrive automatically, and you can type over one like any other score. The quiz can take a typed score back: a new attempt by the student, re-marking the quiz, or Sync to Gradebook on the quiz's Results page replaces it with the quiz result. Each quiz cell has a Results button that opens those results.
Rubric-marked scores are greyed out and cannot be typed over. Change them in ZenGrader, where the rubric and the submission are open together. The ZenGrader button beside the cell opens that student.
Change history: the information icon beside a score shows who last changed it and when.
Before Sync to Gradebook replaces anything, it shows what it will do: how many students' scores will be replaced, how many of those scores were typed in by hand, which excused students keep their status, and which attempts are still waiting for review and will not sync. Nothing is written until you confirm. See Quizzes & Question Banks.
Excused grades and the Exclusions tab
An excused score is left out of that student's final grade and CLO attainment instead of counting as zero. In the grid, an excused cell is yellow with an EX tag, and its score cannot be edited. You excuse a student in ZenGrader. The Exclusions tab lists everyone who is excused from what, and Lift for this assessment removes an exemption. For how excusing differs from ungraded and dropped scores, see Excused, Ungraded & Discarded.
Gradebook: every student's score on every assessment, with search and sort controls.
View and edit one student's gradebook
Choose Student gradebook above the class grid, or click a student's name. Search for a student by name, roll number or login ID, select them and choose Open student.
That student's assessments and sub-parts appear as a vertical list, each with its due date, a score field and a grade status of Graded, Not graded or Excused. A count above the list shows how many items match the current filters.
Find assessment searches assessment names, sub-parts and categories.
Show assessments narrows the list to published work or drafts.
Grade status shows only graded, not graded or excused items.
The two date fields set an inclusive due-date range. Dates include the student's extensions, and undated work is left out of a range.
Sort assessments orders the list by due date, name or category. Your choice is saved to your account for each course.
Clear filters shows all work again.
Type scores into as many rows as you need; each changed row is marked Unsaved. Nothing is saved until you choose Save changes, the floating button at the bottom right, which turns teal while changes are waiting. Clear a score to mark it not graded; entering zero records a zero.
If a score is outside the allowed range, or a save fails, that row says why and keeps your entry while the other scores still save. Choose Save changes again to retry. Opening another student, following a link or closing the page with unsaved changes asks before you leave.
Quiz scores can be entered like any other score and link to the quiz results; a new attempt, re-marking or Sync to Gradebook replaces a typed quiz score. Rubric grades are read-only here and link to ZenGrader. An excused item links to where it can be lifted. “Not graded” means no score has been recorded; it does not necessarily mean the student has not submitted.
The student gradebook is read-only for a student who is no longer active, for a course that has ended or is locked, and for administrators.
Exporting
Format
Use case
Export to PDF
A clean, printable results sheet.
Export to Excel
Full spreadsheet for further analysis or institutional reporting.
Export Questions / Sub-parts (CSV)
Per-question detail rather than just assessment totals, useful for outcome analysis or external gradebooks.
Results & Outcomes
The Results & Outcomes tool applies your Course Settings › Grading Scheme (absolute cutoffs or bell curve, see Courses & Settings) to every student's weighted total across all assessment groups, and shows:
A Final Grade Distribution chart, a quick visual of how the class performed (how many A's, B's, etc.).
Each student's weighted total, Letter Grade, and GPA side by side.
If Attendance is enabled as a weighted category, the same total includes each student's attendance percentage at the instructor-set weight.
Results & Outcomes: class summary, distribution, attainment exports, and student results.
Releasing grades to students
Grades stay hidden from students by default at both the child-question level (toggle in Manage Assessments or ZenGrader) and the assessment level, so you can finish grading everyone before anyone sees a score. Once you release an assessment or the final grade, the corresponding student notification/email can go out (see Messaging for notification opt-outs).
